Gangneung's Wolhwa Street Night Market opens for the season — with English menus this year
If your Korea trip takes you east to Gangneung (강릉) — the coastal city that's become a quieter K-drama-infused alternative to Seoul — there's a new reason to stay out after sunset. The Wolhwa Street Night Market (월화거리 야시장) opens for its 2026 season on May 1, and this year it's leaning more visibly toward foreign visitors.
The basics
- Open: May 1 – October 31, 2026
- Hours: 6 PM – 11 PM
- Days: Friday and Saturday nights only (closes during rain for safety)
- Where: Gangneung Wolhwa Street, in central Gangneung (강원도 강릉시)
- Stalls: 41 total — 21 food stalls + 20 free-market stalls
- Cost: Free entry; pay-as-you-go for food and goods
What's on offer
Food (21 stalls):
- Korean street-food classics: skewers (꼬치), stir-fried noodles, jokbal (pig's feet)
- Western-leaning bites: steak, homemade burgers, churros
- Fusion items: shrimp tacos, potato waffles
Free market (20 stalls):
- Caricatures and tarot readings
- Cotton candy
- Handmade accessories and crafts (resin art, macramé)
What's new this year (and why it matters for you)
- English menus at participating stalls — small detail, big difference if you don't read Hangul.
- Expanded seating compared to previous years — more room to actually sit and eat instead of standing curbside.
- Rain cancellation policy — the market closes during rainy nights for visitor safety, so check the weather before you head out.
Why we noticed
Gangneung has been quietly upping its hospitality game throughout 2026 (it's officially declared 2026–2027 as its "Visit Gangneung" years). Adding English menus to a local night market isn't a headline move — but it's the kind of small operational change that signals the city is paying attention to international visitors who are starting to spread beyond Seoul, Busan, and Jeju.
"A more mature Wolhwa Street night market will gift hope to local merchants and special memories to visitors." — Gangneung organizers
Travel logistics
- Getting to Gangneung from Seoul: KTX from Seoul Station → Gangneung Station, ~2 hours, around ₩27,000
- From Gangneung Station to Wolhwa Street: short taxi or local bus ride into central Gangneung
- Tip: Pair the night market with daytime activities — Gyeongpo Beach, Anmok Coffee Street, or Ojukheon historic site are all nearby
The Seoulist will keep an eye on which regional welcome programs actually deliver for travelers — and update this page after the season runs.
