Gyeongbokgung Cheopjong 2026: a Joseon guard review, free, Oct 30–Nov 1
The Korea Heritage Service (국가유산청) restages Cheopjong (첩종), the Joseon king's review of his palace guard, at Gyeongbokgung from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 1, 2026. Shows run twice a day, at 11:00 and 14:00, on Heungnyemun Plaza (흥례문 광장). Watching costs nothing and needs no booking, so it fits into an ordinary palace morning or afternoon.
The essentials
- What: a reenactment of Cheopjong (첩종), a Joseon-era military ceremony
- When: October 30 to November 1, 2026, at 11:00 and 14:00 each day
- Where: Heungnyemun Plaza, Gyeongbokgung (경복궁), Jongno-gu, Seoul
- Admission: free to watch, no reservation needed (Naeil Shinmun, October 23)
- Organizers: the agency's palace and royal tombs office (궁능유적본부) with the Korea Heritage Agency (국가유산진흥원)
- Status: the October 29 rehearsal and the changed guard-ceremony schedule come from one report (K-Spirit, October 24); confirm both on the palace office site before you go.
- Official site: royal.khs.go.kr
What Cheopjong is
The name means ringing a bell over and over. In the Joseon period that bell called a drill in which the king inspected his guard in person, so the palace would be ready for an emergency, according to Naeil Shinmun and Munhwa Ilbo.
Both reports say civil and military officials gathered with soldiers of the Owi (오위), the central army, for a review in front of the king. Munhwa Ilbo adds that the event also served to enforce military discipline and show royal authority. Munhwa Ilbo says this year's staging draws on two Joseon state texts, the Gyeongguk daejeon (경국대전) and the Gukjo orye-ui (국조오례의).
What you will see
- Period dress and arms. Costumes, weapons and ceremonial objects from the early Joseon period, rebuilt after historical research (Naeil Shinmun, Munhwa Ilbo).
- Drill and formations. K-Spirit describes the program as the king checking his soldiers' martial skills and battle formations.
- A new unit. The geumgun (금군), the guard that stayed closest to the king, is a new addition to this year's ceremony, according to Munhwa Ilbo and K-Spirit.
Admission and times (and the guard-changing change)
The free part is the ceremony. Naeil Shinmun and K-Spirit describe it as free for people visiting Gyeongbokgung, and none of the three reports says palace entry itself is free. Look up that week's palace admission and opening hours on the palace office site.
K-Spirit also reports a rehearsal on Thursday, October 29, open to the public at 11:00.
If you were planning around the gatekeepers' changing ceremony (수문장 교대의식), note the schedule shift. According to K-Spirit, it will not run during the event. A Gwanghwamun guard ceremony (광화문 파수의식) takes its place at 10:00 and 13:00.
For more traditional performance later in the trip, a separate K-Heritage Stage showcase runs on Friday, November 13 at Korea House KOUS (한국문화의집) in Gangnam-gu. K-Spirit says it presents new works by trained performers of national intangible heritage, with all seats free on a first-come basis through Naver reservation.
How to get there
- By subway: the palace office's directions page (checked October 26, 2026) lists Gyeongbokgung Station (경복궁역, Line 3), Exit 5, about two minutes on foot.
- Other stations: the same page gives Anguk Station (안국역, Line 3), Exit 1, or Gwanghwamun Station (광화문역, Line 5), Exit 2, each about six minutes away.
- Find the plaza: show 흥례문 광장 to palace staff if you are unsure where to stand.
Our verdict
Go if Gyeongbokgung is already on your list for that Friday to Sunday: the review adds color and costs nothing extra. Pick the 11:00 show for a morning visit, or the 14:00 show if you want the morning for other sights.
Visitors set on the classic gate-guard change should adjust, since the Gwanghwamun ceremony replaces it that week, per K-Spirit. The guard schedule and palace entry are the two points to check on royal.khs.go.kr. The last Cheopjong show is at 14:00 on Sunday, November 1.
